Project Germination - The Vrede Conservancy
Project Germination is a multiple-use gamebird conservancy, benefiting AGRED members, the local farming communities and increasing gamebird numbers through wise habitat management. Situated at Vrede and relatively close to Johannesburg, the conservancy is a field laboratory for AGRED to develop integrated gamebird management and utilisation.
We are making progress with development, with commitments from ten farmers covering an area of 26 500 ha. The dog-training centre has been established and detailed surveys of gamebirds numbers and distribution have been intensified. Management options are being developed in conjunction with farmers.
In these early stages of the conservancy, we have adopted a conservative approach consistent with our philosophy of ethical and sustainable utilisation. The long-term goal is high-quality, ethical gamebird shooting supported by fine gundogs and excellent value for money. We offer three types of activities in 2007: gamebird shoots, courses and gundog training. In future years, we will expand on all activities. We believe that the wonderful scenery, birds and other wildlife will draw AGRED members and their families back to the conservancy in summer for de-stressing weekends in relaxed surroundings.
Of interest to field-trialists is that the Natal HPR Field Trial will take place in the Vrede Conservancy during 20-22 July 2007.
