Firearms licensing: assistance for AGRED members
The new Firearms Act has brought about substantial changes in the licensing and relicensing process for firearms which greatly affects every firearms owner. There has been great uncertainty but the picture is slowly clearing. We will assist AGRED members through this process as far as possible. If your birth date falls between January and March, or if you are purchasing a new firearm, you will need to apply for a license or relicense before the end of September 2005.
AGRED has prepared a 17-page advisory, which provides an overview and detail required to answer many questions. This is currently available in electronic format and members can email us at agred@netdial.co.za to request this. Should you require the written version, we can photocopy this and mail to you at a cost of R20 ordinary mail.
AGRED has made arrangements with service-providers who will provide Proficiency testing at a reasonable cost. AGRED will also set up special testing days in the greater Johannesburg region, provided at a special price to AGRED members.
The bottom line is that the new process will require a major input of energy and patience from you. I believe that there is no alternative but to go through the new process. It must be a concern that if the implementation of the new firearms Act fails, there could be even more serious constraints on the ownership of firearms in the future.
